A non-reader follow-up is a second send of the same broadcast to people whose phone received it but who never opened it. In Chirpoo you set a wait of 1 to 168 hours when you create the broadcast, and it sends once more to those people only. Each resend is billed by Meta as a new marketing message.

## What does "read" mean on a WhatsApp broadcast?

Every message you send moves through statuses that Meta reports back to the sender: sent, delivered and read. Delivered means the message reached the person's phone. Read means Meta saw it opened. A broadcast report in [Chirpoo](https://chirpoo.com/) shows how many of your recipients are at each stage, so you can see the gap between delivered and read.

That gap is your follow-up list. People who never got the message (a switched-off phone, a number that is not on WhatsApp) are not in it, because there is nothing to nudge. Chirpoo's follow-up goes only to people the message was delivered to and who did not read it.

Read status is useful but not perfect. It is reported by Meta, and what Meta reports is what you see. Treat the number as a good guide to interest, not as a count of people who ignored you. A customer may have read your message in a notification preview and acted on it later.

## Why does a read rate matter to Meta?

Read rate is one of the signals Meta uses to decide how much marketing a person receives. Meta's [per-user limits page](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/templates/marketing-templates/per-user-limits) (checked 26 Oct 2026) says:

> WhatsApp may limit the number of marketing template messages a WhatsApp user receives from any business in a given period of time when they are less likely to be receptive and engage with those messages.
>
> Source: [Meta, Per-user marketing template message limits](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/templates/marketing-templates/per-user-limits)

On the same page, Meta says the limit depends on factors including a person's recent marketing message read rate. Meta's [template quality page](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/templates/template-quality) (checked 26 Oct 2026) adds that a template with low read-rates can fall to a medium or low quality rating and may be paused.

So two bad habits cost you twice: sending more to people who never read, and sending a weak message. A follow-up helps only if it goes to the right people, once, with a reason to read.

## How long should you wait before the follow-up?

Wait at least a day. Meta's own retry advice for messages blocked by the per-user limit is to wait at least 24 hours before trying again, and sending again sooner will mostly return errors. A follow-up after a few hours is also likely to arrive while the first message still sits unread on the phone.

A useful pattern for a small business:

- **Offer with a deadline:** follow up after 24 to 48 hours, and make sure the deadline has not passed.
- **Event or class reminder:** follow up the next morning, before the event.
- **Festival campaign:** two days between sends, as in the [Diwali playbook](https://chirpoo.com/blog/diwali-whatsapp-broadcast-playbook/).

In Chirpoo, the field is called "Follow up with non-readers after (hours)" on the broadcast form and accepts 1 to 168. It is optional. Leave it empty and nothing is resent automatically, though a finished broadcast also shows a "Resend to N who did not read" button. These timings are suggestions from running a studio, not rules from Meta.

## Who does Chirpoo not send the follow-up to?

The follow-up runs through the same checks as the first send. Chirpoo skips contacts who opted out, contacts with no marketing consent, suppressed numbers and anyone who has hit the frequency cap. It also checks the health of your number before it sends.

It sends only once. If you already retried a broadcast, Chirpoo refuses a second retry, and a retry itself cannot be retried. That limit protects people from a chain of reminders.

People who replied are in a different situation. Once a customer answers, a 24-hour window opens and your team can talk to them normally, so do not send them another marketing template on top of a live chat. Look at the replies first, and tag buyers so your later segments leave them out. The [tags and segments post](https://chirpoo.com/blog/whatsapp-contact-tags-segments/) shows how.

## What does a follow-up cost?

A follow-up is a new marketing message to each person, so Meta charges it again. At Meta's India rate of ₹0.8631 per delivered marketing message (from WhaBuzz's [India pricing post](https://whabuzz.com/blog/whatsapp-business-api-pricing-india/), checked 26 Oct 2026), a follow-up to 400 non-readers costs 400 × ₹0.8631 = ₹345.24. Meta bills that to your own account.

Chirpoo adds nothing per message. You pay ₹999 a month, excluding 18% GST, whatever you send. That makes the follow-up a question about Meta's rate and your list, not about a markup. Tools that charge per message or add a markup make every resend cost more; see how [Chirpoo compares with AiSensy](https://chirpoo.com/compare/chirpoo-vs-aisensy/).

Run the numbers before you press Start. If 2,000 people got a message and 1,200 read it, a follow-up to the other 800 costs about ₹690. If your average order is ₹1,500, one extra sale covers it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Chirpoo follow up with people who did not read my broadcast?

Yes. Set "Follow up with non-readers after (hours)" between 1 and 168 when you create the broadcast. Chirpoo sends once more to people who received it but did not read it, after the same consent and opt-out checks as the first send.

### How many times can I retry a broadcast?

Once. Chirpoo allows a single non-reader retry for each broadcast, and a retry cannot be retried. This keeps customers from getting a chain of reminders, which would raise blocks and reports and lower your number's quality rating.

### Does the follow-up cost extra with Chirpoo?

Chirpoo charges nothing per message. Meta bills each follow-up as a new marketing message, at ₹0.8631 per delivered message in India (checked 26 Oct 2026), to your own Meta account. Your Chirpoo plan stays at ₹999 a month, excluding 18% GST.

### Should I follow up with someone who replied?

No marketing resend is needed. A reply opens a 24-hour window in which your team can answer normally. Read their message, answer it, and tag them so future segments know where they stand.
