The WhatsApp Business app is a free phone app for one number, used by one person at a time. The WhatsApp Business API connects the same kind of number to software, so a whole team can answer, automate and broadcast. [Chirpoo](https://chirpoo.com/) is that software, ₹999 a month, excluding 18% GST, with Meta billing messages separately.

## What is the difference between the WhatsApp Business app and the API?

The app is where you chat. The API is a connection that lets other software chat for you.

On the app, your phone is the inbox. You see chats, reply, and use the catalogue and status features Meta built into it. You can link a small number of extra devices, but the app is designed around one owner and one number.

On the API, there is no Meta app to open. Your number is attached to the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), and a tool such as Chirpoo gives your team an inbox in a browser or on a phone. Meta does not offer an inbox of its own for the API. What you see, assign and automate is the tool's job.

| | WhatsApp Business API with Chirpoo | WhatsApp Business app |
|---|---|---|
| Who answers | A team, 5 logins included | One phone, linked devices |
| Assign a chat | Yes | No |
| Internal notes | Yes | No |
| Automations | No-code flows with test run and shadow mode | Basic in-app replies |
| Broadcast | Opted-in contacts by tag, scheduled, with follow-up | Sent from one phone |
| AI agent | Yes, off until you switch it on | No |
| Several numbers | Several in one workspace | One app per number |
| Cost to use | ₹999 a month, excluding 18% GST | Free |
| Message charges | Paid to Meta directly, no markup | None |

Chirpoo's side of the table is the shared work. If more than one person touches a chat, the table already answers the question.

## Is a shared inbox the real reason to move?

For most owners, yes. The sign is simple: someone says "who replied to her?" or "which phone has that chat?" more than once a week.

On a single phone, the chat belongs to whoever holds the phone. If that person is on leave, in a meeting or has left, the customer waits. With a shared inbox, every chat is visible to the team. You can assign it, leave a note for a colleague ("she wants the 7 pm slot"), snooze it until tomorrow and search old chats by name or number. Each chat shows the 24-hour reply window so nobody types a reply that Meta will refuse.

The thing that breaks first on a single phone is rarely volume. It is handover, when the person holding the phone is away and nobody else can see the chat.

The inbox is covered in full in [shared WhatsApp inbox for teams](https://chirpoo.com/guides/shared-whatsapp-inbox/) and in [run a WhatsApp inbox with a team](https://chirpoo.com/blog/run-whatsapp-inbox-with-a-team/).

## What do you gain by moving to the API?

Four things, in the order most owners notice them.

1. **A team on one number.** Five logins are included in Chirpoo. An extra login is ₹250 a month, excluding 18% GST.
2. **Messages that send themselves.** A flow can start on a new message, a tag, an ad click or a Shopify order, then reply, send a template, tag or assign the chat. See [WhatsApp automation](https://chirpoo.com/guides/whatsapp-automation/).
3. **Broadcasts to people who agreed.** Pick contacts by tag, send an approved template, schedule it and follow up with people who did not read. See [WhatsApp broadcast marketing](https://chirpoo.com/guides/whatsapp-broadcast-marketing/).
4. **A record of where leads came from.** For click-to-WhatsApp ads, Chirpoo saves the ad's headline and link on the contact. See [click-to-WhatsApp ads](https://chirpoo.com/guides/click-to-whatsapp-ads/).

You also get an AI agent that answers in your tone, looks up products and orders and hands over to a human. It never sends offers. See [AI agent for WhatsApp support](https://chirpoo.com/guides/ai-agent-whatsapp-support/).

## What do you lose by moving to the API?

Features that live inside the app, such as the in-app catalogue and Status, belong to the app. Once the number is on the API, Chirpoo is where your team works, so check Meta's documentation for any app feature you rely on before you move.

Three other changes are certain.

- **Chat history stays behind.** Per [Meta's migration page](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/solution-providers/migrate-existing-whatsapp-number-to-a-business-account) (checked 26 Oct 2026), if you delete the app account and register the number with the Cloud API, your existing messaging history will be lost. Back up your chats first.
- **The app stops working on that number.** The number can only be in one place.
- **You pay Meta for messages.** The app never charged you for chats. The API does, per delivered message, by category.

Meta describes a second route, where a partner that supports business app number onboarding lets you use the app and the partner's tool together and keeps your history. Meta's page does not promise that every partner supports it, so ask before you rely on it. The delete-and-register route is the one described next.

## How do you move your number from the app to the API?

The steps follow Meta's migration page. Allow an evening, and do it when customers are least likely to write.

1. **Back up your chats.** Export the ones you need. They will not carry across.
2. **Keep a list of your key customers.** Chirpoo adds each person as a contact, one per phone number, when they message the new number. If you have a developer, the Chirpoo API can also add contacts from a script.
3. **Delete the WhatsApp Business account in the app.** In the app, go to Settings, then Account, then Delete my account. This removes the number from the app. It does not delete your SIM or your number.
4. **Wait for the number to free up.** Meta says:

> It may take up to 3 minutes for the disconnected number to become available.
>
> Source: [Meta, Migrate an existing WhatsApp number to a business account](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/solution-providers/migrate-existing-whatsapp-number-to-a-business-account)

5. **Connect the number in Chirpoo.** Sign in at the Chirpoo login page and choose to add a number. Meta's sign-up pop-up verifies it with a code.
6. **Collect marketing consent again.** A customer who replies START is opted in, and consent recorded in Shopify syncs across. Only opted-in contacts get broadcasts.
7. **Create your templates and test.** See [WhatsApp message templates](https://chirpoo.com/guides/whatsapp-message-templates/). Approval can take up to 24 hours.

The full walkthrough, with a checklist for the day, is in [move from the WhatsApp Business app](https://chirpoo.com/blog/move-from-whatsapp-business-app/). If you prefer to avoid the delete step, connect a second number to Chirpoo and run both for a week.

## When should you move off the WhatsApp Business app?

Move when a second person needs to answer, when you want a message to send itself, or when an ad or a Shopify store starts sending more chats than one phone can hold. Chirpoo's 14-day trial lets you test that on real chats before you pay anything.

A fair test: for one week, count the chats that waited because the right person was not holding the phone. If the count is more than a handful, you have already outgrown the app.

## What does Chirpoo cost compared with the free app?

The app is free. The API has two costs: your tool's monthly fee and Meta's per-message charge.

Chirpoo is ₹999 a month, excluding 18% GST, with one number and 5 logins. Chirpoo Commerce is ₹1,499 a month, excluding 18% GST, with the Shopify store messages. Extra numbers and logins are ₹250 a month each, excluding 18% GST. Chirpoo adds nothing per message.

Meta's India rates from 1 Oct 2026, per its [rate card](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/business-messaging/whatsapp/pricing#rate-cards-and-volume-tiers) (checked 26 Oct 2026), are ₹0.8631 for a marketing message and ₹0.115 for utility, authentication and service messages, before tax. Each number also gets 1,000 free service messages a month. An assumed month of 300 marketing messages, 800 utility messages and 500 free-text replies comes to ₹258.93 plus ₹92.00 plus ₹0, which is ₹350.93 to Meta. Take one week of chats, count the handovers and the missed replies, and then try Chirpoo on a spare number. [Start free](https://app.chirpoo.com/login) for 14 days with every feature and no card. If you are not ready to move your main number, connect a second number first and keep the app as it is.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and the API on the same number?

Not in the standard route. Meta's documented path is to delete the app account and register the number on the Cloud API. Meta also describes onboarding through partners that support business app number onboarding, which keeps both and your history. Confirm support with your provider.

### Will I lose my chats if I move to the API?

Yes, in the delete-and-register route. Meta states your existing messaging history will be lost. Back up important chats first. In Chirpoo, each customer becomes one contact per phone number when they write to you, with tags and consent kept on that contact.

### Is the WhatsApp Business API better for small shops than the app?

Yes, once more than one person answers, when you want messages to send themselves or when you run ads. Chirpoo gives a small shop all three for ₹999 a month, excluding 18% GST, with a 14-day free trial and no card.

### How much does the API cost compared with the app?

The app is free. The API has a tool fee, ₹999 a month for Chirpoo excluding 18% GST, and Meta's per-message charge, ₹0.8631 for marketing and ₹0.115 for utility in India, before tax. Chirpoo adds nothing per message.

### How long does the move take?

Plan an evening. Deleting the app account frees the number in up to 3 minutes per Meta. Connecting it takes minutes. New templates can take up to 24 hours for Meta to approve, so submit them first.
