#How does a Shopify abandoned checkout reach a tool like Chirpoo?
A checkout becomes abandoned when a shopper enters their details and does not finish. Shopify's abandoned checkouts help page (checked 26 Oct 2026) says a checkout counts as abandoned after it stays incomplete for more than ten minutes following the customer's email entry.
Shopify records that checkout, with its items and the shopper's contact details, and a connected app can act on it. Chirpoo Commerce, once installed on your store, starts the cart reminder flow from it. You do not write code or paste a script.
Three details decide whether a reminder can go out.
- A phone number. WhatsApp needs one. If the shopper never gave a phone number, there is nothing to send to.
- Consent. The shopper must have opted in to marketing messages. The next section explains why.
- No completed order. If the shopper bought in the meantime, the reminder should not go out. Chirpoo flows start on a Shopify order as well, so a finished purchase can stop the sequence.
Because these are separate checks, expect only a share of abandoned checkouts to be eligible. That is correct. A smaller list of people who agreed to hear from you is worth more than a bigger list of people who did not.
The whole store setup is in the WhatsApp for Shopify guide.
#Why does a cart reminder need consent?
Because Meta classes it as marketing. Meta's template categorisation page (checked 26 Oct 2026) lists abandoned cart reminders under retargeting.
These are marketing even if requested by users.
Meta's send messages documentation (checked 26 Oct 2026) also says: "Only send messages to WhatsApp users who have opted into receiving messages from your business."
Two consequences follow. First, you need a recorded opt-in before the reminder. Chirpoo tracks marketing consent on every contact and syncs Shopify marketing consent both ways, so a shopper Shopify records as subscribed to WhatsApp marketing is eligible and one who is not is skipped. Email or SMS consent alone does not count. The Shopify marketing consent post covers the checkout wording.
Second, the reminder costs the marketing rate. In India that is ₹0.8631 per delivered message, against ₹0.115 for utility, per Meta's rate card as read in WhaBuzz's India pricing post (checked 17 Oct 2026). Meta bills you directly. Chirpoo adds nothing per message.
If a shopper replies STOP or "band karo", or uses Meta's own opt-out, marketing sends end for that contact. See opt-out and STOP in India.
#What is the two-step reminder, and when does it send?
Chirpoo Commerce sends the cart reminder in two steps by default. The first step is a light nudge. The second step follows if the shopper still has not ordered.
A good split looks like this.
| Step | Purpose | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Remind | Name, the items left behind, a checkout link |
| 2 | Give a reason to finish | The same link, plus a reason: stock, a deadline or a code |
The exact delays are set inside the flow, and you can change them there. The right gap depends on what you sell. A low-priced item you buy on impulse wants a quick first reminder. A high-priced item people compare wants a longer wait so you do not look pushy.
Two rules help for any store. Send in daytime hours your customers are awake. And stop after the second step. A third message in the same week turns a reminder into pressure, and it can lead to blocks and a weaker quality rating. The messaging limits and quality rating post explains why that matters.
Meta's example for this category reads like a reminder, not a shout: "You left {{items}} in your cart! Don't worry, we saved them. Checkout now below." Keep yours at that length.
#How do discount codes fit in?
Use them in step two, not step one. Step one asks whether the shopper simply got distracted. Many were. Step two is where a small incentive can tip the decision.
Create the code in Shopify as you normally do, and write it into the second template's text. Because the template already carries a marketing label, adding a code does not change its category. Do not add a code to your order-confirmed message. Meta treats an order update with a promotion in it as marketing, which moves a ₹0.115 message to ₹0.8631.
Some practical limits keep codes from eating your margin.
- Make the code expire. A code with no deadline teaches shoppers to abandon on purpose.
- Make it single-use or limited to that product group.
- Keep it modest. A shopper who still wants the item will often finish for a small incentive.
- Track it. Give the abandoned-cart code a distinct name so you can see how often it is used.
If you would rather not discount at all, step two can say the item is selling fast, but only when that is true. Never invent scarcity.
#Why is Shopify's checkout email not enough for Indian shoppers?
Shopify's recovery is email. The abandoned checkouts help page (checked 26 Oct 2026) says Shopify can email customers who abandon checkout after entering an email address, and each email contains a link to the abandoned cart.
Each email contains a link to the customer's abandoned cart, allowing them to complete their checkout if they choose.
The same page lists cases where no email is sent, including when "the customer entered a phone number instead of an email address". The page does not mention SMS or WhatsApp for recovery.
That last case is the gap. A shopper who gave only a phone number gets no Shopify recovery email at all, and in India that describes a lot of mobile checkouts. A WhatsApp reminder reaches them, provided they opted in.
The two channels also complement each other. Email is good for people who read mail. WhatsApp is good for people who live in their phone. Running both is fine, but do not send the same text on both within the same hour. If you want a side-by-side of tools, see best WhatsApp apps for Shopify in India.
#What if the shopper has no phone number or no consent?
Then WhatsApp is not the route, and Chirpoo does not try to work around it. Without a phone number, nothing can be sent. Without consent, a marketing send is blocked by Chirpoo and would break Meta's rule.
Do these three things instead.
- Ask for WhatsApp consent. Make the phone number field clear and ask for WhatsApp marketing consent in plain words. Say what you will send.
- Keep Shopify's email recovery on. It still covers shoppers who gave an email.
- Offer the chat button. A WhatsApp chat button on the store lets a hesitant shopper start the conversation themselves. When they message you first, a 24-hour window opens and your team can reply with ordinary text. See the chat button post.
Do not buy lists, scrape numbers or add people to a reminder because they once messaged you about something else. A recovered sale is not worth a blocked number.
#How do you measure recovered orders?
Chirpoo's attribution view shows which orders followed a message. For cart reminders, that means you can see orders that were placed after a shopper received step one or step two.
Read it with care. "Followed" is not "was caused by". Some shoppers would have come back anyway. To keep the claim honest, compare against a week where the reminder was off, or hold back a small group of eligible shoppers. Then count the orders on each side.
Track four numbers weekly.
- Reminders sent, split by step.
- Replies, since a reply opens your inbox conversation.
- Orders that followed a reminder.
- Opt-outs after a reminder. A rise means the message or the timing is wrong.
Meta's charge is the cost side. For 1,000 step-one reminders at ₹0.8631, Meta bills ₹863.10, and the same again for step two if every shopper received both. Compare that with the order value of what you recovered. The WhatsApp pricing guide has the full cost picture.
#What mistakes should you avoid?
Most failed cart flows break one of five rules.
- No opt-in. The fastest way to get blocked, and against Meta's rule.
- Too many messages. Two is the default for a reason.
- Reminding people who already bought. Check that a completed order stops the sequence, using the test run before going live.
- Promotion in a utility template. Keep order messages and cart reminders separate.
- A dead link. Open the checkout link on a phone before you switch the flow on.
Run the flow in Shopify test mode first, then use shadow mode so you see what it would send before it talks to customers. For the wider flow tools, read the WhatsApp automation guide.

Frequently asked questions about Chirpoo and this topic
Is an abandoned cart reminder a marketing message on WhatsApp?
Yes. Meta's template categorisation page lists abandoned cart reminders under retargeting and says they are marketing even if requested by users. In India that is ₹0.8631 per delivered message, billed by Meta to you. Chirpoo adds nothing per message.
Can I send a cart reminder without opt-in?
No. Meta says to only message users who have opted in, and Chirpoo blocks marketing sends to contacts without consent. Record WhatsApp marketing consent in Shopify, or have the shopper reply START, and Chirpoo syncs Shopify consent both ways.
Does Shopify send abandoned cart messages on WhatsApp?
Shopify's help page describes recovery by email only, and it sends nothing when the shopper entered a phone number instead of an email. Chirpoo Commerce at ₹1,499 a month, excluding 18% GST, adds the WhatsApp reminder.
How many reminders should I send?
Chirpoo sends two steps by default. A third message in the same week tends to read as pressure and can lead to opt-outs and a weaker quality rating. Change one thing at a time and watch the opt-outs.
