WhatsApp Template Rejected? Reasons and Fixes

A rejected WhatsApp template is one Meta's review declined, usually for a formatting slip, a wrong category or wording that reads as promotional or threatening. Each reason has a short fix. In Chirpoo, "Fix it" opens a new draft that uses Meta's reasons, and you can also appeal to Meta within its own tools.

#Why does Meta reject templates, and how long does review take?

Meta's template review page (checked 26 Oct 2026) says the content goes through "a combination of automated systems and manual reviews" and that a decision "can take up to 24 hours". Result notices reach WhatsApp Manager, the email of your Meta Business Suite admins and a status webhook.

Plan for that day. A Diwali offer needs approval before you schedule it, so submit early; the Diwali playbook has a calendar. If the answer is a rejection, you lose a day only if you do not know why.

Meta shows the rejection reason in Business Support Home, under Rejected message templates. Chirpoo brings the same reason onto the template in your list, so your team does not have to log in to Meta to read it.

Meta's review page lists the usual causes of rejection. Group them in four:

  • Variable formatting. Missing or unmatched curly braces, special characters inside a variable, variables out of sequence, or too many variables for the length of the message. A template also cannot start or end with a variable. Meta says "dangling parameters are not allowed".
  • Policy breaks. Content that breaks the Commerce Policy or the Business Policy, such as asking for sensitive identifiers like full card numbers, or abusive and threatening wording.
  • Length and emojis. A body over the limit for its format, or too many emojis.
  • Duplicates. The same body and footer wording as a template you already have.

Beyond these, a wrong category is a common reason. A utility template with an offer line in it is a typical case. WhaBuzz's template approval post (checked 26 Oct 2026) maps Meta's reason codes to plain language: INVALID_FORMAT for variable problems, INCORRECT_CATEGORY for category mismatch, PROMOTIONAL, ABUSIVE_CONTENT and SCAM. Those notes are WhaBuzz's, not Meta's.

#How do you fix each reason?

ReasonFix
Variable at the start or endPut a few words before the first variable and after the last
Variables out of order or repeatedNumber them {{1}}, {{2}}, {{3}} with no gaps
No sample valuesAdd an example for every variable; Meta needs one
Special characters in a variableKeep variables to plain text
Wrong categoryRemove the offer line from a utility message, or submit it as marketing
Sounds like a threat or scamRemove deadlines that pressure, legal threats, prize wording and link shorteners
Asks for sensitive dataDo not request card, Aadhaar or PAN numbers in a template
DuplicateChange the wording, or use the template you already have

Short, plain messages pass most often. Say who you are, what the message is about and what happens next. Skip ALL CAPS and repeated "!!". The utility vs marketing post explains how to choose the category.

#What does "Fix it" do in Chirpoo?

A rejected template in Chirpoo shows a "Fix it" button. It opens a fresh draft that starts from the rejected text and Meta's reasons, and the AI rewrites the message to Meta's rules. You read it, edit anything, and submit. Chirpoo checks the draft first for the things Meta rejects most: a variable at the start or end, missing samples, URL shorteners, all-caps words and offer language in a utility template.

Meta does not let you reuse a template name, so the new draft gets a new name. The old rejected one stays in your list as a record.

You can also start from nothing. Describe the message in one line, such as "tell the customer their gym trial is booked for tomorrow", and Chirpoo drafts the template. Nothing goes to Meta until you submit.

This is a drafting aid. Meta makes the decision, and Chirpoo cannot promise approval. Test with a small, plain message first.

#What do Meta's library templates skip?

Partly. Meta's Template Library (checked 26 Oct 2026) offers pre-written utility and authentication templates for common cases like payment reminders and delivery updates. Meta says:

These pre-written templates have already been categorized as utility or authentication.

Source: Meta, Template Library

The wording is fixed, and you adapt only the parameters. Meta adds that if you choose "Customize template", it has to go through review before you can send. Its API example for an unedited library template shows the status APPROVED. Meta's page does not use the words "instant approval", so treat the library as a way to avoid most rejection risk.

Chirpoo can activate a Meta library template in one click, so a delivery update or payment reminder can be live without drafting a word. If your use case is not in the library, write your own. The templates guide shows both routes.

#How do you appeal a rejection?

If you think Meta got it wrong, appeal in WhatsApp Manager. Meta's review page says "If your submission is rejected you may file an appeal. Note that appeals must include a sample." Open Message templates, select the template, edit it, add a sample for each variable, then submit. Meta says the appeal is reviewed and decided within 24 hours.

Use an appeal when the category looks right to you and the wording is plain. If the reason is a clear formatting slip, it is faster to fix the text and submit again. For a category change by Meta, you can request a review within 60 days of the change.

Chirpoo costs ₹999 a month, excluding 18% GST, with one WhatsApp number and five logins, and adds nothing per message. Frequently asked questions about Chirpoo and this topic

How long does Meta take to approve a WhatsApp template?

Meta says a decision can take up to 24 hours, using automated systems and manual review (checked 26 Oct 2026). Submit templates at least a day or two before you need them, so there is time to fix a rejection and resubmit.

What is Chirpoo's Fix it button?

Fix it appears on a rejected template. It opens a new draft built from the rejected text and Meta's reasons, rewritten to Meta's rules. You review and edit it, then submit under a new name. Meta still makes the final decision.

Can I edit a rejected template and resubmit?

Yes. Meta's review page says you can edit a rejected template and resubmit it, or appeal the decision. In Chirpoo the Fix it draft is a new template with a new name, because Meta does not allow a name to be reused.

Are Meta library templates approved without review?

Meta's library templates are pre-categorised and have fixed wording, and its example shows an APPROVED status. If you choose Customize template, Meta says it must go through review first. Meta's page does not promise instant approval.
