#How do WhatsApp order updates work for a Shopify store?
A customer places an order. Shopify records it. A tool watching the store sees that event and sends an approved WhatsApp template to the phone number on the order, with the order number and name filled in.
The same thing happens when you fulfil the order. Shopify marks it shipped, and the tool sends a second template with the customer's name, the order number and a tracking link. The customer gets both on the same WhatsApp chat, next to the messages they already exchange with your store.
Meta's own developer blog describes the idea as sending WhatsApp notification messages to customers based on events in the store. Two parts matter. The message must be a template that Meta has approved, because you are writing first, outside any chat the customer started. And the customer must have given you their number for this purpose, which at checkout they usually have.

#What do order updates cost on WhatsApp?
Two bills exist. Meta charges per delivered message. Your tool charges its own fee.
According to Meta's pricing page (India rates checked 17 Oct 2026), an India utility message costs ₹0.115 from 1 Oct 2026. A marketing message costs ₹0.8631. Order confirmations and shipping updates are utility messages because they follow something the customer did.
A store with 1,000 orders a month sends about 2,000 order messages: one confirmation and one shipped update per order. At ₹0.115 that is ₹230 a month paid to Meta.
Chirpoo adds nothing per message and never bills for messages. You pay Meta directly. The store messages are part of the Commerce plan at ₹1,499 a month, excluding 18% GST, with one WhatsApp number and 5 team logins included. The pricing guide shows how the two bills fit together.
#How do you set up order updates in Chirpoo?
Setup takes four steps.
- Start the trial. Sign in with an email code. The 14-day trial has every feature and needs no card.
- Connect your WhatsApp number. Chirpoo runs on the official WhatsApp Cloud API, so the number is yours and stays yours.
- Connect the Shopify store and switch on order updates. They are off until you press "Create the default templates" in settings, which sends them to Meta. They are included in the Commerce plan.
- Test before you go live. Chirpoo has a Shopify test mode, so you can try the messages before they reach a real customer.
Chirpoo writes the order-confirmed and shipped templates to Meta's rules and submits them for approval. If Meta rejects one, Chirpoo redrafts it using Meta's stated reasons. You do not fill in Meta's template forms yourself. Our message templates guide explains the approval process in more detail.
#What is the product-photo version of an order update?
Your first approved templates are text. Text works, but a photo of what the customer bought makes the message look like it came from the store, not a system.
Chirpoo submits a richer version of each template that includes the product photo. Meta reviews it separately, as it does every template. Until Meta approves the rich version, the message goes out without the photo. Once approved, your customers see the product image with the order details.
You do not fill in anything extra. Chirpoo submits the templates for you, and a rejected template is redrafted using Meta's reasons.
#Why do order updates go wrong, and how do you avoid it?
- Writing sales copy into a utility message. Meta decides a template's category from what it says. A coupon code in an order confirmation can push it towards marketing, which costs ₹0.8631 instead of ₹0.115. Keep it about the order.
- Sending before you have consent. Order updates need the customer's number and a reason to message. Promotions need opt-in. Chirpoo tracks marketing consent separately, and our consent post explains how it syncs with Shopify.
- Skipping the test. A wrong tracking link reaches every customer. Run the test order first.
- Forgetting replies. A customer who answers "where is my order?" starts a 24-hour reply window. Your team should see it in the shared inbox. See the 24-hour window explained.
You can also add a chat button to your store so customers can start the conversation themselves, and ask for a review after delivery.
Other Shopify WhatsApp apps differ in who bills Meta, what sits behind a higher plan and how many logins you get. Our ranked list for Indian stores sets the options side by side, and the Chirpoo and Zoko comparison shows the money for one popular alternative.

Frequently asked questions about Chirpoo and this topic
Are Shopify order updates on WhatsApp free?
No. Meta charges ₹0.115 per delivered utility message in India from 1 Oct 2026, and the tool you use may add its own fee. Chirpoo adds nothing per message. You pay Meta directly, and Chirpoo Commerce costs ₹1,499 a month excluding GST.
Does the customer have to opt in to order updates?
Customers give you their phone number at checkout, and an order update is about their own order. Marketing messages are different: they need explicit opt-in. Chirpoo tracks marketing consent per contact and blocks marketing sends to anyone who has not opted in.
Can the message include the tracking link?
Yes. The shipped template carries a tracking link, so the customer can follow the parcel without messaging you. Chirpoo waits up to 10 minutes after fulfilment for Shopify to hold the tracking number, then sends a version without the link if none arrives.
Do I need a developer to set this up?
No. Chirpoo writes the templates, submits them to Meta and sends them when the Shopify order event arrives. You connect the store, run a test order and switch the messages on. There is no code to write.
