#Why do COD orders get returned for Indian stores?
A returned COD parcel is a parcel you paid to send and paid to bring back. It is often called RTO, return to origin. The customer never paid, so there is nothing to refund, but the shipping cost is gone and the stock is stuck in transit for days.
The usual reasons are ordinary ones. The buyer placed the order on impulse and changed their mind. The phone number was wrong. Nobody was home. The address was incomplete. A confirmation message checks the first three before the courier is booked.
There is no sourced industry figure for RTO rates worth quoting here, and your own is the one that matters: count COD orders placed, COD orders delivered and COD orders returned over a month, before and after you start confirming. The RTO reduction post shows how to read those numbers.
A confirmation message does not change the buyer's mind about the product. It filters out orders that were never going to be accepted, and it catches wrong numbers while the order is still cancellable.
#How does a Yes or No confirmation message work?
The flow has four steps, and each one is automatic once it is set up.
- A customer places a COD order on your Shopify store.
- Chirpoo sends a WhatsApp template with the order summary and two buttons, Yes and No.
- The customer taps a button. A tap is a reply, so it also opens a 24-hour window, which lets your team follow up with ordinary text if they want to.
- Chirpoo acts on the answer. Yes tags the Shopify order and the contact
cod-confirmed. No cancels and restocks the order in Shopify and tags itcod-cancelled.
If the customer does nothing within the window, 24 hours by default, Chirpoo tags the order cod-unconfirmed. You can also choose to cancel those orders automatically. That is optional, and it is off until you switch it on.
The message goes out as a template because it starts the conversation. Meta's template review page (checked 26 Oct 2026) says approval can take up to 24 hours, so Chirpoo drafts the COD template and submits it to Meta for you when you switch COD confirmation on. The broader store setup is in the WhatsApp for Shopify guide.
#What does Meta class a COD confirmation as?
It is written to be utility. Meta's template categorisation page (checked 26 Oct 2026) defines the category in two parts.
Utility templates are typically triggered by a user action or request.
The same page says a utility template must be non-promotional, with no promotional or persuasive intent. A COD confirmation is triggered by the customer's own order and only asks them to confirm it, so it fits.
The page does not name cash on delivery specifically, and Meta decides the category when it reviews the template. That decision is why wording matters: a confirmation with a discount line becomes marketing, because Meta treats mixed content as marketing.
The price follows the category. In India a utility message is ₹0.115 and a marketing message is ₹0.8631, per Meta's rate card as read in WhaBuzz's India pricing post (checked 17 Oct 2026). So confirming 1,000 COD orders with a clean utility template costs ₹115 in Meta charges, billed by Meta to you. Chirpoo adds nothing per message. See utility vs marketing templates and what each costs for the difference.
#What should the confirmation template say?
Keep it short, factual and free of offers. Four things belong in it: the customer's name, the order number, the total to pay on delivery, and a clear question. Here is an example of the text. The numbered items are variables that Chirpoo fills in from the order.
Three writing rules keep it approved and honest.
- No dangling variable. Meta rejects a body that starts or ends with a variable. End on a sentence, as above.
- No promotion. Do not add "order again and get 10% off". That turns utility into marketing.
- One question. Two asks in one message lowers answers and confuses Meta's reviewers.
Chirpoo drafts the COD template for you to these rules, and if Meta rejects it, Chirpoo redrafts it using Meta's reasons. If you want to change the wording, edit the draft and check the category pill before you submit. The rejected template fixes post lists the common causes.
#How do confirmed orders get shipped and unconfirmed ones held?
Chirpoo writes the answer onto the Shopify order as a tag: cod-confirmed, cod-cancelled or cod-unconfirmed. Tags are the simplest way to split your work into lists.
Your team filters Shopify orders by the cod-confirmed tag and ships those. Orders tagged cod-unconfirmed wait. You either cancel them automatically or, if you prefer a human touch, someone sends a short follow-up.
Chirpoo does not integrate with courier or shipping apps, and it does not collect payment or convert COD to prepaid. Because the tag sits on the Shopify order itself, a shipping app that filters orders by Shopify tags can use the same list.
If someone taps No, they stay in your inbox as a normal chat. That is useful: a customer who cancels often says why in the next message, and your team can answer within the open 24-hour window. Chirpoo shows that timer on every chat, which the 24-hour window explainer covers.
#How does this fit with the order-confirmed message?
Send one message, not two. Give a COD customer the COD confirmation in place of the plain order-confirmed message, and give a prepaid customer the order-confirmed message. If both went to the same COD buyer, they would see two near-identical messages within seconds, and the second one would feel like spam.
The order of events for a COD order looks like this.
| Step | Message | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Order placed | COD confirmation with Yes and No | Utility |
| Customer taps Yes | Short thanks, optional | Free text inside the window |
| Order fulfilled | Shipped, with tracking link | Utility |
| Delivered | Review request, later | Marketing |
The review request sits later and is marketing, so it goes only to customers who opted in. Meta's send messages documentation (checked 26 Oct 2026) says: "Only send messages to WhatsApp users who have opted into receiving messages from your business." Chirpoo tracks that consent on each contact and syncs Shopify marketing consent both ways. The step-by-step for the shipped message is in Shopify order updates on WhatsApp.
#What metrics should you watch?
Track five numbers each week. All of them come from your own store and Chirpoo, so none needs an outside benchmark.
- Confirmation rate. Yes taps divided by COD orders placed.
- No-answer rate. COD orders with no tap after 24 hours. High numbers often point to wrong phone numbers or a template that looks unfamiliar.
- Cancel rate. No taps plus auto-cancels. This is stock you did not ship.
- Delivered rate for confirmed orders. Delivered divided by shipped among those who tapped Yes. Compare it with your older COD delivered rate.
- Reply time on No taps. How fast your team answers. Chirpoo's inbox shows who owns each chat, and reply time and missed leads explains why this matters.
Change one thing at a time. If you reword the template and switch on auto-cancel in the same week, you will not know which one moved the numbers. Chirpoo also lets you see which orders followed a message, so you can tie an outcome to the confirmation.
One clear message, sent straight after the order, does the work. Resist the urge to add reminders on day one.

Frequently asked questions about Chirpoo and this topic
Does Chirpoo cancel unconfirmed COD orders automatically?
Only if you choose it. By default Chirpoo tags an unanswered order cod-unconfirmed after 24 hours, and it cancels the order only when you switch auto-cancel on. That way you can run confirmation alone for a week and see your answer rate first.
How much does a COD confirmation message cost?
If Meta approves the template as utility, a message costs ₹0.115 in India, so 1,000 confirmations cost ₹115, billed by Meta to you. Chirpoo adds nothing per message. The plan is ₹1,499 a month, excluding 18% GST.
Can customers answer in their own words?
Yes. A tap on Yes or No opens the 24-hour window, and any free-text reply lands in your shared inbox. Your team can answer in ordinary text inside that window. Chirpoo shows the remaining time on every chat.
Does Chirpoo connect to courier or shipping apps?
No. Chirpoo tags confirmed orders in Shopify, and your team uses that list to decide what to ship each day. Chirpoo does not integrate with couriers, collect payment or convert COD to prepaid.
