#Why do tags matter for WhatsApp broadcasts?
Because the same message does not suit everyone, and Meta watches how people react. Meta's message quality guidance (checked 26 Oct 2026) lists what to do to keep quality high, including:
Make the messages highly personalized and useful to users.
Tags are the cheapest way to do that. Meta says it scores quality from signals such as blocks, reports and mutes over the past seven days, so a message that lands on the wrong person costs you more than a rupee. A gift-box offer sent to someone who bought a gift box last week is useful. The same offer sent to a customer who only asked about opening hours is noise.
Chirpoo keeps one contact per phone number, with their tags, consent status and chat history in one place. That is what makes a tag reliable: it follows the person, not the conversation.
#How do contacts get tags in Chirpoo?
Four ways, and you can use all of them together.
- By hand. Tag a contact from the inbox while you chat. Do this for facts only a human knows: "wants a callback", "corporate order".
- From flows. A no-code flow can add or remove a tag as a step. A flow that answers "price?" can tag the contact
asked-price. Because a tag can also start a flow, one flow can hand a contact on to the next. - From ads. A flow can start when someone messages you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad. Add a tag in that flow, such as the campaign name, and every contact from that ad is grouped. See ad attribution.
- From Shopify. Tags on a Shopify customer arrive in Chirpoo with a
shopify:prefix, so a store tagrepeatappears asshopify:repeat. A flow can also start on a Shopify order and add its own tag. Shopify marketing consent syncs both ways, which matters because a broadcast goes only to opted-in contacts.
The AI agent can add tags too when you switch it on.
#How do you build a segment for a broadcast?
On the broadcast form, choose "tags", type the tags comma-separated, and a contact with any of them is included. That is an "or", not an "and". If you need "bought in 2026 and opted in to offers", create one tag for that group with a flow instead of stacking two tags.
Before you press Start, the pre-flight check counts the audience. It shows how many contacts are in it, how many have marketing consent, and how many are held back because they opted out or have no consent. If the sendable number is smaller than you expected, fix consent first, not the tag.
Keep a short naming rule: lowercase, one word or hyphens, a prefix per purpose. buyer-2026, lead-gym, ad-diwali, optin-offers. Your future self will thank you at 11 pm on a festival eve. You can also pick a Shopify segment as the audience in the same form.
Once the broadcast is running, retry the non-readers once, and keep the festival plan from the Diwali playbook in mind.
#What are good tags for each kind of business?
These are examples of how a business might name its tags. They are illustrations, not data from any account.
| Business | Useful tags | Broadcast idea |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify store | buyer, repeat, cart-abandoned, shopify:vip | New arrivals to repeat, a restock note to asked-restock |
| Gym or studio | member, lapsed, trial-done, ad-newyear | A comeback offer to lapsed, a class note to member |
| Coaching institute | batch-jee-2027, parent, demo-attended | Fee reminder to parent, a test date to one batch |
| Clinic or salon | regular, bridal-enquiry, due-checkup | A reminder to due-checkup |
| Agency | client-a, client-b, prospect | Updates to one client's list only |
For a studio, three plain lists cover most of what a small team sends: members, people who tried a session, and people who enquired and went quiet.
Agencies with several clients can also run more than one WhatsApp number in one workspace, and choose which number sends. See multiple numbers in one inbox.
#What mistakes should you avoid with tags?
- Tagging too much. Twenty tags nobody uses. Start with five.
- Tags that mean two things.
interestedcould mean a lead or a buyer. Pick one. - Ignoring opt-outs. A tag never overrides consent. A contact who sent STOP stays out of marketing, whatever the tag says. The opt-out post explains it.
- Mixing languages in one tag set. Keep one language for tag names, even if chats run in Hindi, Telugu and English.

Frequently asked questions about Chirpoo and this topic
Can a broadcast go to contacts with two tags at once?
A Chirpoo broadcast sends to contacts who have any of the tags you list, not all of them. To target an overlap, add a flow that gives the overlapping group one new tag, then broadcast to that tag.
Do Shopify tags come into Chirpoo?
Yes. A Shopify customer tag appears in Chirpoo with a shopify: prefix, for example shopify:repeat. Shopify's marketing consent also syncs both ways, so a customer who unsubscribes in Shopify stops receiving marketing sends.
Does a tag override STOP?
No. When a contact sends STOP, "band karo" or uses Meta's own opt-out, Chirpoo ends marketing sends to them, whatever tags they carry. The pre-flight check on a broadcast counts these contacts as held back.
How many tags should a small business start with?
Start with about five, covering who they are (buyer, member, lead), where they came from (an ad name) and one consent tag. Add more only when you have a message that needs a new group.
